Situational Awareness Training Module
The Situational Awareness Training (SAT) web-based package is an effective tool to train and educate personnel traveling to, or operating within, challenging, remote, new or hostile environments where natural or manmade risks might expose personnel to a range of common or unique risks and challenges in terms of safety and security. The course is designed to meet the needs of both expatriate travellers and deployed project staff, as well as local national staff. Often organizations overlook the needs of local staff, who are exposed to equal – if not more – risk than the foreign personnel and as such this training relates to locals and internationals.
The training is broken down into 7 core modules:
Personal Safety and Security: It is important to understand that many threats can be identified before they occur, and that the foundation of safety and security starts are the individual level – by being more aware of risks and your surroundings, and by taking simple precautionary measures you can significantly reduce the probability of being subject to both manmade and natural risks.
Safe Travel Considerations: Travel presents increased vulnerabilities in that commonly you are entering an area or country where you may have no previous experience and so are presented new challenges. As such effective travel management is essential to give you the time to become situationally aware of a new operating environment and protect yourself from risks that may be obvious to local residents, but not so to you.
Landbased Travel Management: Land based travel often presents you with varied challenges and risks, whether you are a resident or familiar with the area, or are visiting the region for the first time – in that you move often through different social divides and topographical features with varied and seasonally driven risks. In addition, long distance travel can present prolonged exposure to risks – whether manmade or natural.
Natural Risks and Responses: Floods, hurricanes and earthquakes present their own challenges, however they may also trigger a range of manmade threats such as disease, a lack of basic utilities and increased levels of crime. By understanding such risks and having methods to deal with natural hazards you can significantly increases personal safety and security while at work, travelling or at home.
Manmade Risks and Responses: Manmade risks include a wide range of challenges such as opportunistic and organized crime, war or intra-state conflicts, labour disputes, political instability, as well as insurgency and terrorist acts. Manmade threats can also present some of the same problems seen within a natural disaster – knowing the risks and understanding mitigation and response measures is critical for safety and security.
Cultural and Social Awareness: In some countries cultural differences can be very distinct from area to area, and indeed the laws and practices may vary significantly. Failure to understand the local environment can cause offence on a personal level, and may have an impact on business relationships and how people view you, your group or your organization. In extreme cases it can also place you at risk of being detained, arrested or even attacked.
Health and Hygiene: Situational awareness in what you eat and drink, what risks might be present from insects, animals and parasites, and how climatic conditions might present a challenge is very important. Understanding stress and taking measures to relax and unwind can also support a more healthy emotional state within frustrating environments.
The Situational Awareness Training course captures over 6hrs of comprehensive and practical training to help employees and their families better understand, avoid, mitigate or respond to wide ranging challenges whether at home, traveling or working abroad.
The information and recommendations apply universally, they are the common denominators of what risks are and how you or your staff might mitigate or respond to them. It is important that individuals and groups place this training into the context of who you are, what you do, where you operate and who you are associated with.
RSM are world leaders of instructional design, our courses include determining the desired learning and/or behavioral outcomes of multiple organizations and groups; identifying the common denominator for the targeted learners existing knowledge and experience and developing a training program that will efficiently and effectively achieve the desired results.
